A native of England, Abell joined Vidal Sassoon in London in 1966. During this period he created some of the geometric looks for which Sassoon became famous. He moved to the United States in 1976 as the company's International Artistic Director, leaving two years later to open Trampp salon on La Cienga. The shop remained there until 1986, when Abell and partner Lee Tanaka opened the original A.T. Tramp salon on Melrose Avenue.

Abell has toured for Aveda and conducted educational seminars nationwide. James' career started at a very young age. At 15, he started in the industry working under a Sassoon artistic director. Soon after, he worked for one of the original Sassoon legends. By the time he was 25, he opened Gamine Salon in West Hollywood. After 10 years of running a salon, he decided to join ventures with his father Joseph Kendall, of Joseph Martin salon. Father and son now have five salons in Beverly Hills, and they continue to grow. Through James, an inspired, youthful and energetic team of stylists has flourished at Joseph Martin Salons. His celebrity clients include Selma Hayek, Nicole Kidman, Patrick Dempsey, Hilary Duff, Matt Goss, and Heath Ledger, among many others.
